16 min read
Studying at AGH? Krowodrza puts you approx. 5 min from campus. At the UJ campus at Ruczaj the closest area is Dębniki, and at UEK on Rakowicka it is Grzegórzki, each approx. 5 min away.
This guide is for students moving to Kraków from abroad or from another Polish city. It sorts the 30 Kraków areas osiedlo.app covers, 18 districts and 12 suburbs, by what shapes a student year: getting to your university, life without a car, a tighter budget and evenings out. osiedlo.app does not rent or sell flats and takes no commission, so no area sits higher here because someone paid for it. Every rating and travel time is an osiedlo.app estimate; where they come from and what they leave out is in the method section below.
Kraków areas for students at a glance
Pick your university or what matters most to you, and the table keeps only the areas that fit. Ratings run from 0 to 5, and the time is the public transport trip to the closest of the 5 universities we measure.

Areas in one group score very close to each other, so we do not number them. A few points between Krowodrza and Grzegórzki say less than how far a given flat stands from the tram stop.
Getting to your university: which areas are closest
osiedlo.app measures trips to 5 universities: UJ (the Jagiellonian University) in the centre, the UJ campus at Ruczaj, AGH (AGH University of Krakow), the Kraków University of Technology (PK) on ul. Warszawska and UEK (the Kraków University of Economics) on Rakowicka.
For each one we built a profile in the same osiedlo.app engine that ranks areas in the paid report. The trip to that campus counts most: up to approx. 15 min it scores in full, past that it counts less and less, and 30 min is set as the limit. Student feel and public transport count half as much as the trip.
Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Grzegórzki sit at or near the top for every campus except Ruczaj.
UJ in the centre: Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Grzegórzki
Krowodrza and Stare Miasto come out on top, with Grzegórzki right behind them. From Stare Miasto the trip takes approx. 5 min, from Krowodrza approx. 10 min and from Grzegórzki approx. 12 min.
The next group is Dębniki, Podgórze, Prądnik Czerwony and Bronowice, each approx. 15 to 18 min away. Zwierzyniec is in that group too (approx. 15 min), but osiedlo.app rates listing availability there at 2/5.
UJ campus at Ruczaj: Dębniki, by a clear margin
Dębniki leads clearly, because Ruczaj is part of it: dorms and new blocks along their own tram line, approx. 5 min from campus. Behind it are Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki.
Krowodrza and Stare Miasto are approx. 30 min away but make up for it with student feel 5/5 and public transport 5/5. Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki is the shortest trip after Dębniki, approx. 15 min.
Good to know before you pick Ruczaj: beyond what a student needs, there are few shops and services, and the campus tram is crowded when classes start and end.
AGH: Krowodrza and Stare Miasto, then Grzegórzki and Bronowice
Krowodrza and Stare Miasto come out on top, with Grzegórzki, Bronowice and Prądnik Czerwony right behind. AGH is in Krowodrza, with Miasteczko Studenckie, the AGH dorm town, right behind it, so the trip from Krowodrza is approx. 5 min. Bronowice is approx. 12 min away on a direct tram, Stare Miasto approx. 15 min, Prądnik Czerwony approx. 18 min and Grzegórzki approx. 20 min.
Zwierzyniec is also approx. 12 min from AGH, but osiedlo.app rates listing availability there at 2/5, and outside Salwator there are hardly any rooms to rent.
Kraków University of Technology on ul. Warszawska: Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Grzegórzki
Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Grzegórzki come out on top, with Prądnik Czerwony right behind and Bronowice and Podgórze after it. From Grzegórzki and Stare Miasto the trip takes approx. 10 min, from Krowodrza and Prądnik Czerwony approx. 12 min, and from Bronowice and Podgórze approx. 20 min.
PK also has a second campus in Czyżyny. Our times are to the main campus on ul. Warszawska, so if your classes are in Czyżyny, check that route yourself.
UEK on Rakowicka: Stare Miasto, Grzegórzki and Krowodrza
Stare Miasto, Grzegórzki and Krowodrza come out on top, with Czyżyny and Prądnik Czerwony right behind. UEK sits at the edge of Grzegórzki, approx. 5 min away. Prądnik Czerwony is approx. 10 min, and osiedlo.app describes it as the area for UEK students who want to walk to campus. Stare Miasto and Czyżyny are approx. 15 min away, with a direct tram from Czyżyny, and Krowodrza approx. 20 min.
Life without a car: Stare Miasto, then Grzegórzki and Krowodrza
Here we weighed public transport, the trip to the centre, daily shopping and cafes within walking distance. Stare Miasto scores highest: public transport 5/5, and most things are on foot.
Right behind it are Grzegórzki and Krowodrza, also with public transport 5/5, and then Podgórze and Prądnik Czerwony (public transport 4/5). Zwierzyniec scores the same as Prądnik Czerwony, but rooms to rent there are scarce (listing availability 2/5).
Trams are the backbone of Kraków’s public transport and run roughly from 05:00 to 23:00. After that, night buses cover the main routes, so check which one serves your street. Every district in the city has public transport at 4/5 or 5/5, except Swoszowice and Wzgórza Krzesławickie (3/5).
SKA trains link the city with Wieliczka, Skawina and the airport. In Bieżanów-Prokocim, osiedlo.app notes that at rush hour the train from Bieżanów or Prokocim station gets you to the centre faster than the tram.
Lower prices: the north-east and the south of the city
We give no amounts here, because osiedlo.app prices are estimated ranges, not a current price list. We only compare the order of osiedlo.app’s rent ranges for a 2-room flat.
Within the city, the lowest ranges are in Swoszowice and Wzgórza Krzesławickie, then Bieńczyce, Mistrzejowice and Nowa Huta, then Bieżanów-Prokocim. Swoszowice and Wzgórza Krzesławickie are hard going for a student, though: student feel 1/5, public transport 3/5 and approx. 35 min to UJ in the centre.
Bieńczyce, Mistrzejowice and Nowa Huta have trams (public transport 4/5) and suit UEK and PK best: approx. 18 to 20 min to UEK and approx. 22 to 25 min to PK on ul. Warszawska. From there, AGH takes approx. 33 to 35 min and the Ruczaj campus approx. 50 to 55 min, so ride your route at rush hour before you sign. Bieżanów-Prokocim is approx. 20 min from UEK and approx. 30 min from Ruczaj, with SKA trains on top of the trams.
Lower-priced picks by campus, all with public transport at 4/5:
- UEK: Czyżyny, approx. 15 min on a direct tram. osiedlo.app calls it an underrated choice for economics students on a budget.
- AGH and PK: Prądnik Biały, approx. 20 min to each, with lower rent ranges than Krowodrza and Bronowice.
- UJ campus at Ruczaj: Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki (approx. 15 min) and Podgórze Duchackie (approx. 20 min), both lower in osiedlo.app’s ranges than Dębniki. Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki has few rentals, so start looking early.
osiedlo.app rates Stare Miasto as the most expensive, followed by Grzegórzki, Zwierzyniec and Krowodrza.
Evenings out: Stare Miasto, then Podgórze, Grzegórzki and Krowodrza
Here we weighed cafes and restaurants, nightlife, the trip to the centre and public transport. Stare Miasto scores highest, with nightlife 5/5 and cafes 5/5; it includes Kazimierz, the part of Kraków richest in bars and cafes.
Right behind it, close together, are Podgórze, Grzegórzki and Krowodrza. Podgórze has nightlife 4/5 and cafes 4/5, and in Zabłocie there are more bars side by side than anywhere else outside the centre. Grzegórzki and Krowodrza have nightlife 3/5 and cafes 4/5; in Krowodrza, the streets of Nowa Wieś towards the centre are full of cafes.
The trade-off is sleep. Stare Miasto has quiet at 1/5, and in Kazimierz it is hard to sleep on weekend nights. In Krowodrza, the streets closest to the dorms are loud on weeknights too, not just at weekends.
If you want to go out in the centre and sleep somewhere calmer, look at Dębniki (quiet 4/5): from Stare Dębniki it is a short walk over the bridge to Wawel.
Where Kraków is a poor fit for a student
There are no bad areas, only areas that are a poor match for someone’s year. These are the weakest matches in osiedlo.app’s ratings, profile by profile:
- Student life in general: Kocmyrzów-Luborzyca, Michałowice and Świątniki Górne, with public transport 2/5 and student feel at 0 to 1/5. Within the city: Wzgórza Krzesławickie and Swoszowice.
- UJ campus at Ruczaj: within the city, Nowa Huta and Wzgórza Krzesławickie (approx. 55 min), then Bieńczyce and Mistrzejowice (approx. 50 min).
- AGH: within the city, Wzgórza Krzesławickie (approx. 40 min), then Nowa Huta, Bieżanów-Prokocim and Swoszowice (approx. 35 min each).
- UEK: within the city, Swoszowice (approx. 35 min) and Wzgórza Krzesławickie (approx. 28 min, student feel 1/5). Of the other districts, Dębniki (approx. 35 min) and Bronowice (approx. 30 min), on the far side of the city, have the longest trips.
- UJ in the centre and PK: within the city, Swoszowice (approx. 35 min to both) and Wzgórza Krzesławickie (approx. 35 min to UJ in the centre, approx. 30 min to PK).
- No car: Kocmyrzów-Luborzyca, Michałowice and Świątniki Górne (public transport 2/5), and within the city Wzgórza Krzesławickie and Swoszowice (3/5).
- Evenings out: the same 3 suburbs and Wzgórza Krzesławickie. Across the city, 11 of the 18 districts have nightlife at 1/5.
- Quiet for studying: Stare Miasto (quiet 1/5), with weekend street noise, above all in Kazimierz and around the Rynek.
- Finding a room: Zwierzyniec (listing availability 2/5), where rooms to rent outside Salwator are rare.
The same Nowa Huta that is a long ride from Ruczaj is approx. 20 min from UEK, with some of the lowest rent ranges in the city.
How this guide was made
osiedlo.app covers 30 areas in Kraków: 18 districts and 12 suburbs, among them Wieliczka, Zabierzów, Skawina and Niepołomice. Each gets a rating from 0 to 5 on 12 criteria, among them the trip to the centre, public transport, quiet, green space, daily shopping, cafes, nightlife, student feel, new housing and listing availability. Travel time is an osiedlo.app estimate by public transport to 6 places: Rynek Główny, UJ in the centre, the UJ campus at Ruczaj, AGH, the Kraków University of Technology on ul. Warszawska and UEK on Rakowicka.
Each profile in this guide is a set of weights in the same engine that ranks areas in the paid report:
- Student life in general: student feel 90, public transport 70, cafes 50, trip to the centre 40.
- Your university: the trip to that campus 100 (full marks up to 15 min, limit 30 min), student feel 50, public transport 50.
- No car: public transport 100, trip to the centre 80, daily shopping 80, cafes 40.
- Evenings out: cafes 90, nightlife 80, trip to the centre 70, public transport 50.
Kraków is the one city whose data the owner of osiedlo.app has reviewed by hand. It was last reviewed in July 2026 for the districts and in August 2026 for the suburbs; data confidence is medium for the districts and medium or low for the suburbs.
What this data does not tell you:
- Schools and preschools: osiedlo.app has no such criterion.
- Safety: we have no crime data from the police or any other named source, so this guide does not use it.
- Air quality: only 15 of the 30 areas have a rating from GIOŚ station measurements, the rest are estimates, so we do not compare it here.
- A specific flat or room: the rating describes the area, not a building, a street or a landlord.
- Your faculty building: UJ and PK have more buildings than the points we measure, so check the address on your timetable.
You can read more about how osiedlo.app describes the city on the Kraków page.
What to check before you sign a lease

Common questions
What is the worst area to live in Kraków as a student?
There is not one. Nowa Huta is a poor choice if you study at Ruczaj (approx. 55 min) and a sensible one at UEK (approx. 20 min), with some of the lowest rent ranges in the city. Stare Miasto is the opposite trade: everything is close, but quiet is 1/5. The weakest matches for each profile are listed above.
Which area of Kraków is the safest?
osiedlo.app does not answer that. We have no crime data from the police or any other source we can name, so we do not rank areas by safety. Walk around the flat in the evening and look at the lighting and the way from the stop.
Where is it cheapest to live in Kraków as a student?
Within the city, osiedlo.app has the lowest rent ranges for Swoszowice and Wzgórza Krzesławickie, then Bieńczyce, Mistrzejowice and Nowa Huta, then Bieżanów-Prokocim. The first 2 have public transport at 3/5, the other 4 have 4/5. Check current prices in listings, because our ranges are estimates.
When should I start looking for a room in Kraków?
osiedlo.app notes that listings peak and prices firm up from July to September, as students return, and that the calmest time to search is roughly November to May. In Krowodrza, good rooms go within a day in September, so start looking before then.
Is it worth living outside Kraków as a student?
For a daily trip to class, rarely. osiedlo.app estimates approx. 35 min or more from every suburb to every university we measure. Zabierzów and Wieliczka have SKA trains, but in both the walk to the station decides whether the train helps, and in Wieliczka trains run less often in the evening and at weekends.
One sentence to remember
Start from your campus: Krowodrza, Stare Miasto and Grzegórzki suit most universities, Dębniki suits Ruczaj, and the tram districts in the north-east cost less if you study at UEK or PK.
